Viagra boosts feel-good 'love' hormone - CNN.com:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Impotence drugs such as Viagra may do more than help men physically have sex -- they may also boost levels of a hormone linked with feelings of love, U.S. researchers reported Thursday.

Viagra and related drugs seem to act on the part of the brain that controls release of the hormone oxytocin.

Viagra, known generically as sildenafil, raised levels of the hormone oxytocin in rats, the team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison said in a report published in the Journal of Physiology.

This hormone is involved in nursing and childbirth but also in orgasm and feelings of sexual pleasure.

And it seems Viagra and related drugs act on the part of the brain that controls release of oxytocin, said Wisconsin physiology professor Meyer Jackson.

"This is one piece in a puzzle in which many pieces are still not available," Jackson said in a statement. "But it raises the possibility that erectile dysfunction drugs could be doing more than just affecting erectile dysfunction."

Viagra, made by Pfizer Inc., is an inhibitor of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5. Related drugs such as Eli Lilly and Co.'s Cialis, known generically as tadalafil, and Levitra or vardenafil, sold by GlaxoSmithKline, Bayer AG and Schering-Plough, are also PDE-5 inhibitors.

They block this enzyme, which in turn breaks down other compounds. This increases blood flow in the muscles but it also affects a brain structure known as the posterior pituitary.

This, in turn, boosts oxytocin, at least in the rats. It probably does the same thing in people, Jackson said.

"It does the same thing it does in smooth muscle -- instead of (levels) coming down in a minute or two, they stay up a little longer," Jackson said in a telephone interview.

Oxytocin was known for years to be involved in labor and it is the hormone that causes the "let-down" of milk in breastfeeding babies. Only in recent decades has it been found to have a function in men -- in sexual arousal and function.

This could suggest other uses for Viagra and related drugs, Jackson said -- perhaps promoting social bonding.

"What I hope is that people read our paper who can test these ideas in animals and humans," Jackson said.

"I hope that this doesn't cause some wild orgy of inappropriate recreational use."

Some groups have complained that people use the impotence drugs for fun, instead of using them as prescribed for sexual dysfunction caused by low blood flow to the genitals.

The drugs can cause fatal side effects if used with certain other drugs, and some studies also suggest they may affect the eyes in some patients, so doctors stress they are not for casual use.

"(CBS) To many, the appearance of the bikini is the first real sign of summer — a return to the simple pleasures of the beach, like warm sand and blue skies.

And while it's a perfect complement to these gifts of nature, the bikini is most definitely a creation of man — two men, to be precise.

The year was 1946, the place was France. Rival designers Louis Reard and Jacques Heim were competing to produce the world's smallest swimsuit. Their race ended with a bang of inspiration.

Although Heim's suit was first to hit the beach, it was Louis Reard (an automobile engineer)who gave the bikini its memorable name, thanks to an American A-bomb test in the Pacific's Bikini Atoll. And like the atomic bomb, Reard's bikini was a tour-de-force in manipulating tiny bits of matter.

ut for its debut in Paris, the designer had one big problem: no one would model it.

"He couldn't get models," Kelly Killoren Bensimon, author of "The Bikini Book," told CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Serena Altshul. "But he did enlist a stripper to wear the bikini and she wore it. And the picture is so cute."

"Little did she know that she was going set the stage for the rest of the world."

As a model herself, Bensimon is no stranger to the subject.

"The difference between a two-piece and the bikini is that the bikini exposes the navel, which is the 'zone of contention' — 'No, no, don't look there' — and that's why it became really provocative."

In the years that followed, films like "And God Created Woman" with Brigitte Bardot (another popular French export) helped promote the bikini.

It seemed nobody could do more with less, as the trailer for "The Girl In the Bikini" promised: "Brigitte Bardot as an uninhibited child of nature, stripped of all pretense! A lighthouse keeper's daughter who believes in dressing light!"

Here in the U.S., it took two decades of pinup girls, surfer girls, Bond girls, and even cavegirls to make the bikini acceptable, if not entirely respectable.

"The bikini's associated with scandal and that's why it's survived," Bensimon said. "The bikini is about freedom, it's about fun. It's a lifestyle. The bikini is for the bad girl — it's not for Barbie."

Designer Malia Mills' swimwear company is founded on the notion that there's a bikini for every body.

"The design is really the easy part," Mills told Altshul "It's the fitting that takes so much time — you have to be so precise. We fit each bottom to fit a very specific shape. So if you're nice and round, there's a tiny tie side for you. And if you're taller and slender, there's also a skimpy bottom for you as well, because they're cut very differently to fit you beautifully."

"Every little eighth-of-an-inch is a difference between a beautiful fit and one that's just slightly off," she said.

And nowhere does the bikini have a more perfect fit than in women's beach volleyball — the only Olympic sport where it's the official uniform.

"The sexy body is one that looks like it can do something," said Bensimon. "And when you see women, athletic women, or just women that are, you know, in a bikini, you really see their body. You really see that they can do something with it."

But not all the action on the beach is quite so physical. Magazines like FHM keep the cameras clicking year-round — which keeps the magazines flying off the stands.

It all begs the question: How low can it go? And is smaller better?

"I think it is," Bensimon said. "You know, it's like when you wear tight jeans, you look better. When you wear baggy jeans, you look like you're hiding something. When you wear a smaller bikini, it just looks better."

So for the rest of the weekend, go on, stare! And while the movie may say God created woman, it's clear, only man could have created the bikini. "

Supposed "reformer" Saudi King Abdullah, who ascended to the throne last August, has casually informed Saudi newspapers that they will no longer be running pictures of Saudi babes wearing the alluring traditional Muslim headscarf/bodybag.

Aha, you say, a liberalization move allowing women to be shown with less utterly obscurantist covering? Well, no - women may now not be shown in the papers at all. As recently as May 9, such scandalous eye candy as this was on display.

At a policy meeting Monday with editors from the nation's state-owned or state-"guided" papers (which would be all of them), Kubla Khan, I mean King Abdullah, decreed, "One must think, do they want their daughter, their sister, or their wife to appear in this way. Of course, no one would accept this. The youth are driven by emotion ... and sometimes they can be lead astray. So, please, try to cut down on this," he was quoted in the paper Okaz as saying.

It would appear Saudi Arabia is not to be seen zipping down the hasty road to perditious liberation where women can engage in such madcap activities as driving, voting, or breathing and stuff.

When last we took a look at Saudi popular culture a year ago, Saudi religious scholars were condemning the Lebanese American Idol-type show Star Academy: "Young Arab men and women were put together in an abominable state of mingling of sexes ... exposing themselves, singing, dancing and corruption ... What happened is considered a crime against Islam and a great offence against the Islamic nation."

When the show's Saudi winner triumphantly returned home for an appearance at a Riyadh shopping mall, admirers rushed to shake his hand, and girls even — zounds — kissed him. The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice went bananas and put him on a plane to Jeddah.

"A number of youths and girls crowded round him and deviant behavior occurred. Then the commission removed him from Riyadh on the orders of the governor," the sheikhs wrote in a huffy statement. "We call on this youth, and all who took part with him ... and all who gave media coverage or prizes or votes, we call on all of them to repent before God."

Things don't appear to have lightened up a bit in the intervening year.

MALIBU (BOB) -- It's hard to imagine that there was once a beach without a bikini-clad woman in sight.

Sixty one years ago the world of fashion was changed forever with the introduction of the first two-piece bathing suit -- the bikini.

French engineer and designer Louis Réard and fashion designer Jacques Heim both developed the concept of a two-piece bathing suit around the same time in Paris in 1946 and Réard introduced the new design on July 5 at a fashion show at the Piscine Molitor in Paris. It was a string bikini with a g-string back. It was named after Bikini Atoll.

Louis Reard named his skimpy bathing invention after the South Pacific bikini atoll where the atomic bomb was being tested in World War II. Other aspects of the war, historians say, paved the way for the new beachwear.

To help in the war effort, women left the kitchen, purchased shoes and went to work outside the home. This new-found personal and economic freedom was not lost on fashion designers.

However, women in Paris were wearing such items of clothing as the microkini one year before the bikini was "invented".

Fashion expert Adrian Butash, who is writing a book about the bikini, says Reard wasn't the first to design two-piece swimwear.

"The bikini was born in Paris in 1946, right after World War II. It was invented by two gentlemen. Now the most acclaimed at this time is Louis Reard, who is a wonderful designer and an entrepreneur and a show man," Butash said.

But Reard's bikini had a progenitor invented by another Parisian -- Jacques Heim.

"Heim actually produced a two piece bathing suit, a costume for the beach . . . about four or five months before Louis Reard," according to Butash.
Reard gets credit

But Reard's showmanship outgunned the far more reserved Heim, and it was Reard's bikini that shook the world at the Paris fashion show.

"None of the girls would model it, none of the top models at the time. It was too controversial," Butash said.

Reard finally found a nude dancer Micheline Bernardini who was willing to be the first person to wear the bikini. But the bikini was so controversial, it needed something more than a fashion show to get respectable women to wear it.

The French Bikini

If anybody must get credit for popularizing the bikini in the world it is French actress Brigitte Bardot. The bikini becomes such an integral part of Bardot's career that she becomes The Bikini Girl, a title which perhaps derives from her leading role in the movie Manina, La Fille San Voiles (Manina, the Girl without a Veil) and later retitled simply "The Girl in the Bikini". The Bikini Girl,the first to wear that title.

In the late 1950s, actress Brigitte Bardot created a sensation by wearing a bikini in the 1958 film "And God Created Woman."

The fashion revolution was now under way, and even got its own anthem: "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini."

"The women themselves love bikinis, because they are liberating and women love their bodies," Butash said.

Some women agree.

"I think it was more liberation. I think it's great that women could go on the beach and have their own sense of style," one bikini-wearing woman said.

"I think some historians take it too far. It created an opportunity for a woman to have a sort of freedom in terms of feeling comfortable with their body in public, another woman said.

According to the official version, the modern bikini was invented by French engineer Louis Réard and fashion designer Jacques Heim in Paris in 1946 and introduced on July 5 at a fashion show at Piscine Molitor in Paris. It was a string bikini with a g-string back. It was named after Bikini Atoll, the site of nuclear weapon tests a few days earlier in the Marshall Islands, on the reasoning that the burst of excitement it would cause would be like the nuclear device. However, women in Paris were wearing such items of clothing as the microkini one year before the bikini was "invented". This fact is documented with pictures in the July 16, 1945 issue of Life. Film of holidaymakers in Germany in the 1930's show women wearing two-piece bathing suits. Anyone who has seen the elaborately and lavishly assembled Busby Berkeley film spectacle, "Footlight Parade" of 1932 (James Cagney, Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, Joan Blondell, etc.), would have been treated to a stunning aquachoreography that profusely featured what could only be regarded as bikini swimwear. They were to be seen again a year later in "Gold Nuggets of 1933".

Of course the magazine article did not attach the name "bikini" to the swimsuit. At that time the atomic bomb test was a year in the future and virtually no one had ever heard of Bikini Atoll. The article instead spoke of the "French Bathing Suits". But although the name had not yet been adopted, the swimsuits that the Parisian women were wearing are clearly recognizable as bikinis in style and coverage.

Coincidentally, the date of publication of the magazine, July 16, 1945, was the very same day that the first atomic bomb was detonated in the desert outside Alamogordo, New Mexico.

At a tender age, Bettie had to face the responsibilities of caring for her younger siblings as well as helping her mother with the house chores.

Soon, problems between Bettie's parents led to a divorce, which only worsened the family's financial situation. In order to support her family, Edna worked as a hairdresser during the day and washed laundry at night. When Bettie was only 10 years old, her mother placed her and her two sisters in an orphanage while she worked and saved money.

As a teenager, Bettie and her sisters spent countless hours trying different makeup styles and hairdos imitating their favorite movie stars. At the local community centers, Bettie learned to cook and sew, the latter, a skill that proved particularly useful years later when Bettie made her own bikinis and costumes. In these centers, a young Bettie sought refuge from her home and found enough peace and tranquillity to do homework and study. It was her hard work and determination that kept Bettie at the top of her class during her high school years. As a student, she was a member and program director of the Dramatics Club, secretary treasurer of the Student Council, coeditor of the school’s newspaper and yearbook; she was even voted "Most Likely to Succeed."

As the Salutatorian of her class, Bettie won a $100 scholarship to Peabody College where she studied education while dreaming of becoming an actress. In February 1943, Bettie married her boyfriend of two years, Billy Neal. After earning her Bachelor of Arts degree from Peabody College, Bettie moved to San Francisco to be with Billy. It was in San Francisco that Bettie got her first modeling job at a local furrier where Bettie modeled fur coats for clients.

For the next few years, the free-spirited Bettie traveled from San Francisco to Nashville to Miami, even to Portau-Prince, Haiti, where she fell in love with the country and its culture. Back in the United States, in November 1947, Bettie filed for divorce from Billy and moved to New York. In 1950, during a walk along the Coney Island shore, Bettie met Jerry Tibbs, a police officer with an interest in photography. Tibbs took pictures of Bettie and put together her first pinup portfolio. Little did Bettie know how much her life was about to change.

Tibbs introduced Bettie to numerous other photographers including Cass Carr who organized outdoor photographic sessions, which Bettie intensely enjoyed. In a matter of months, Bettie’s modeling career had taken off. Camera clubs led to posing for various magazines such as Wink, Eyeful, Titter, and Beauty Parade. But it wasn’t until her photographs were published in Robert Harrison’s magazines that Bettie became a pinup star beyond comparison. In 1955, Bettie won the title "Miss Pinup Girl of the World." In January 1955, she was the centerfold in Playboy’s January issue. She was even named the "Girl with the Perfect Figure," with her photographs appearing in everything from record albums to playing cards.

In 1953, Bettie auditioned for an apprenticeship at Sea Cliff Summer Theater in Long Island where she studied acting under the tutelage of Herbert Berghoff. With Berghoff’s encouragement, Bettie secured several roles in various New York productions as well as various television appearances. Her off-Broadway productions included Time is a Thief and Sunday Costs Five Pesos. Bettie even appeared in the Jackie Gleason show.

While living and working in New York, Bettie often returned to Florida. During these trips south, she frequently posed for photographers Jan Caldwell, H.W. Hannau, and Bunny Yeager who often featured Bettie outdoors, in boats, and at the beach.

In 1957, Bettie left New York for good and moved to Florida, her modeling career would end at the top of its popularity. On November 26, 1958, Bettie married her second husband, Armond Walterson. During the following months, Bettie tried numerous jobs, and she traveled to numerous states including California, Tennessee, Illinois, and Oregon. In 1963, Bettie divorced Armond. She would later marry Harry Lear, a marriage that also ended in divorce.

Through the 1980s and the 1990s, Bettie Page re-surged as a modeling icon. The media, intrigued by her mysterious disappearance launched a countrywide search for Bettie. Comic books soon featured characters that resembled Bettie, contemporary artists such as Olivia, Dave Stevens, and Robert Blue immortalized their idol with their powerful images. Today, Bettie is enjoying her private life with her family.

Bettie's undeniable influence is present still today in fashion, films, and magazines just to name a few. The dark-haired girl from Nashville has become a living legend, a modern icon, a symbol of beauty and femininity that transcends ordinary standards.
